Mississippi mom gives birth to surprise identical quadruplets
Within a string of surprises, Kimberly Fugate, 42, gave birth to four identical quadruplets at the University of Mississippi Medical Center after multiple ultrasounds had only confirmed triplets. The pregnancy itself was also unplanned and without the use of fertilization drugs and or treatments.
The babies are almost 13 weeks premature.
Fugate tells ABC News, "They had delivered three babies and I heard them say, 'extra feet,' and I was like, 'no!'"
"Dr. James Bofill, a professor of maternal fetal medicine at the hospital, said the odds of conceiving identical quadruplets [are] astonishingly rare," reports ABC News. "The odds of spontaneous quadruplets [are] one in every 729,000 live births." ABC further explains that means identical quadruplets could happen in every one in 13 million births, with only 60 cases in medical history actually documented.
Quadruplets: Kenleigh Rosa, Kristen Sue, Kayleigh Pearl and Kelsey Roxanne, join big sister Katelyn, 10.
