Forget John and Mary, top baby names are getting more creative

In five years, kindergarten classrooms across the country are going to be stocked with children named Noah and Sophia. According to a new study released by the Social Security Administration this week, those were the most popular boy and girl baby names chosen by parents in 2013.

Also popular for boys: Liam, Jacob, Mason and William. The top five names for girls all end with the letter “a,” and also include Emma, Olivia, Isabella and Ava. Another, Mia, comes in at No. 6.

As CNN reports, “In 2013, for the first time since 1960, a new name [Noah] unseated Michael or Jacob as the most popular for newborn boys. Sophia held the top spot for girls for the third year in a row, though Sofia with an ‘f’ is crawling up the list: The latter reached its highest spot ever, at No. 13.”

As always, baby names are heavily influenced by pop culture trends, including the names of television or film characters, actors and musicians.

As CNN reports, “The fastest riser for girls in 2012 was Arya, the name of a beloved character in the ‘Game of Thrones’ series on HBO.”

And as Vox.com reports, other popular 2013 names based on “Game of Thones” characters include Khaleesi and Daenerys. Also rising were Katniss (from “The Hunger Games” books and films) and the “Harry Potter”-inspired Hermione, Sirius, and Draco.

“In 2013, Jayceon and Daleyza made the biggest jumps in popularity in the top 1,000,” CNN reports. “Jayceon rose from 1,051 to 206 from 2012 to 2013, while Daleyza leaped from 3,715 to 585.

“Jayceon is the birth name of the rapper known as The Game. He has a reality series on VH1, ‘Marrying The Game,’ which follows his life as a rapper and father of three.

“Daleyza's rise might have resulted from the influence of a popular Spanish-language reality TV series, ‘Larrymania,’ which airs on mun2,” CNN reports. “Daleyza is the young daughter of Larry Hernandez, an American regional Mexican singer who's the star of the show."
