TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) The Empire Ravens must play this season without Grayson Weeks, their star quarterback from a year ago who passed away in a car accident last December.
Weeks threw for 17 touchdowns against only four interceptions in 2012, while leading the Ravens to an 8-4 season. He died as a passenger in a traffic accident while traveling on I-10 near Benson.
This year, Chance Hatfiled moves from running back to quarterback to try and lead the Ravens.
"It's not going to be anywhere near the same without him by my side," said senior C.J. McAviney.
The Ravens will honor Grayson by lining up with just 10 players on their first play from scrimmage when they open their season against Palo Verde on Friday night.
"I want everyone to know our quarterback is in heaven," said head coach W.T. Jeffries.
Grayson's number 15 will be painted on midfield, and stickers will be worn on the team's helmets.
