TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The nightmare is finally over for the ex-girlfriend a former Tucson Police officer. Martin Ward will spend a decade in prison after pleading guilty to child porn charges.
Judge Jane Eikleberry sentenced Ward to ten years and lifetime sex offender probation. Her decision came after a bizarre sentencing hearing. During a several minute rant, Ward hurled veiled threats at the Tucson Police Department.
It was TPD that busted their former officer with more than 15 child pornography images, described by prosecutors as disturbing photos, some even of toddlers. His ex-girlfriend, Melanie Olson, Ward's victim in an unrelated domestic violence case was in the courtroom to hear the sentence. After years of abuse and living in fear, she told 9OYS after that she's glad this is all finally over.
"It's tough to see someone that you knew in a very different light, donning a uniform, responding to calls and handling major incidents to go from that to what he's at now," said Olson. "He's just a very sick man. It's almost like he's a reflection now of what he was on the inside and what he tried to keep hidden. I'm just grateful to TPD Crimes Against Children and U.S. Marshal's Service in bringing him to justice because it couldn't have been easy going after a former law enforcement officer, but they did it."
When his prison sentence is over, Ward will have to wear a GPS monitoring device for the rest of his life.
