Deputy: Both parties impaired when pedestrian, mother of 3, hit by car, killed
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV)- A woman died Sunday morning after she was hit by a car on the southwest side around 11 p.m. Saturday, according to The Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies found 33-year-old Lea Molina near the intersection of Camino Del Oeste and Corona Road with serious injuries. She was taken to the hospital where she later died.
Sheriff's Department Traffic Unit investigators learned Molina was walking in a vehicle lane when 66-year-old Guadalupe Villalobos hit her from behind. There was a well-lit sidewalk just feet away.
According to deputies, Villalobos was impaired at the time of the accident, and was cited and released for a DUI. They said she could face other charges in the future.
Authorities also discovered Molina was intoxicated when she was hit. Her family said she was walking home at the time. She was less than a mile away when she was hit.
"It's said when you lose someone. It's tragic when you lose someone the way we lost Lea," said her godmother, Sandra Lee Valencia. "She always had a smile; she was always happy to see me...She talked about her mom and dad and she talked about her children."
Molina leaves behind three children and dozens of tight-knit family members, gathered around Sunday evening to mourn their loss.
"They're going to need all of our support -- all our love -- never to forget her," Lea's mother Evelyn shared.
