VA glitch to blame for payment processing error

By Cory Marshall. CREATED Aug 29, 2014

TUCSON(KGUN9-TV) - A system glitch is to blame after thousands of Veterans -- nationwide -- received less money than they should have. In some cases, they received hundreds less than their usual monthly benefits.

The VA glitch specifically affected Veterans on a repayment plan to recoup a medical debt. According to a VA spokesperson, the amount that should have been withheld was sent to the Veteran and the amount the Veteran should have received was withheld. Essentially, the amounts were reversed. In all, about 12,000 Veterans received the erroneous payment.

In a statement to 9OYS, a VA spokesperson said, "The VA sincerely regrets the error and the impact it may have on Veterans and beneficiaries. VA is working to ensure it does not happen again."

Officials are currently working with the Department of Treasury to expedite the proper payments. A spokesperson says the VA hopes to have the payments out by next week.

Anyone with questions regarding the payment error is urged to contact the VA through their toll free number; 1-800-827-1000.
