TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Authorities say a 93 year-old woman was hit, thrown and abused by the very people entrusted with her care.
Not one but two certified care givers made their way through the Pima County court system in the last 24 hours.
The reason why will make anyone who's ever placed a loved one in assisted living facility sick to their stomach.
They are predators of perhaps our most vulnerable population.
67 year-old Elisa Romero and 29 year-old Annuhar Jesus Ruiz, both employees at an Asterion Acres Care Homes on the northwest side, were arrested for, authorities say, slapping and punching a patient, hitting her with a remote and throwing her onto her bed and wheelchair.
"This is a bad case, and that's why detectives moved on it so quickly and were able to locate these individuals and make sure that they were taken out of that facility," said Deputy Jesus Banuelos of the Pima County sheriff's department.
Deputies say the victims son caught the abuse on hidden camera after noticing bruises on his mom.
The owner of the facility calls the abuse sickening.
"The news is devastating not only to me personally but to the care givers in general who do loving and caring hard work to take care of these elderly folks," said Richard Yubeta.
He and deputies maintain no one else suffered through this kind pf violent care, adding those behind the heinous acts should and will be punished.
The Arizona Attorney General's office will try the case.
Both Romero and Ruiz face multiple counts of vulnerable adult abuse, a felony in the state of Arizona.
The victim was hospitalized for her injuries.
Per her familys request she is back in that same assisted living complex.
