TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Two Tucson area schools received national recognition Tuesday and rolled out the red carpet to celebrate their 'blue ribbons'.
They say it's the key to success.
"Education in Tucson is important."
And here that commitment to education is not going unnoticed.
"This was definitely a surprise for all of us," said one student.
"I was very excited actually. I had no idea this was coming," said another.
Tuesday TUSD administrators came together with students and staff to recognize Sabino High School's being named a '2013 Blue Ribbon School.'
"92% of its graduates immediately enroll in a two or four year college," said Prinicpal Matt Munger to the crowd.
The honor, bestowed by the U.S. Department of Education, recognizes schools that have made big strides in the classroom, as well as those like Sabino, that have seen success for years.
"Honestly it's one of those things I wish I could have everyone, parents, students, staff, community members, here for because it's something everyone's earned," he said.
For students, the award is validation and recognition for a school that they say, prepares them to move forward.
"It's not just learning from the book," said Ashley Feig. "It's a lot of real life situations."
KGUN9 wants to throw out a big 'Congratulations!' to Coronado Elementary School in Nogales.
They were also recognized for their longterm high achievement.
