Tucson's "Y" Celebrating 100 Years

By Greg Gurule. CREATED May 14, 2014

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson's YMCA is celebrating it's 100th anniversary, and it's more active than ever.  The "Y" has grown over the year and over the decades has shifted it's focus toward helping families and attracting more women and girls  to what it has to offer.

Basketball is still king at the "Y" where the game was invented, but it has added many other services over time to meet needs.  Those additions include child care for busy "Y" members, weight lifting equipment, swimming classes and even a major push to help people fight diabetes and childhood obesity.

The "Y's" Northwest Center is adding new solar panels that they say will provide 85% of the power needed to keep that facility's programs and outreach growing.

Tucson's YMCA partners with 120 other organizations around the city to help residents and that is part of the reason it was selected to be the Journal Broadcasting Community Partner for May.
