TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - When we are young, we look to our parents for advice. Those that are of age have certainly been around the block, but what about more than a century of wisdom?
One Tucson woman celebrated 105 years on August 16. And after more than a century on Earth, she is not slowing down.
Clarice Cone-Howell has seen a lot over the years, but what was it like when she was growing up, the prime of her early life being in the 1920s?
Mom and dad likely got their first car; under $2,000. How about the "powerful" 38 horsepower engine in your Paige convertible?
If you are lucky enough to have one of those, you then pile the family in and drive to the theater to see Felix the cat. After your short cartoon, an advertisement urges you to buy the latest and greatest flapper dresses.
Then once home, you grab a cool drink from your brand new General Electric refrigerator.
A lot has changed since then, but to Clarice, age is just a number
"It doesn't mean anything," she says. "And I am not going to act like a sedate old lady, I am going to continue to be myself."
Friday, her friends gathered to celebrate with cake, punch and a beautiful piano concert.
Clarice married her husband in her sophomore year of college and doesn't go a day without thinking of him. And with so many years under her belt, she has seen major changes but to her, one thing stays the same.
"Human nature is still the same," she says. "People still make mistakes, people also try to cover up those mistakes, people also learn from their mistakes. Thank goodness I didn't make any mistakes.
105 years. With a birthday celebration like that, all of us want to know, what is her secret to a long life?
Her answer was simply, "Be happy."
