Tucson Red Cross has special help for veterans

CREATED Jan. 21, 2014

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - You normally think of the Red Cross helping victims of fires, floods or other disasters, but the Tucson chapter has recently launched a mission to help veterans jump-start their civilian lives.  Many vets struggle finding jobs and homes after they get out of the military.  Some national estimates say there are nearly three-quarters of a million unemployed post 9/11 veterans, who are part of the 900,000 unemployed vets over all.

The Tucson American Red Cross has a nationally pioneering program to aid vets by helping match them with jobs and find homes they can afford.  The vets Helping vets "Supportive Services for Veterans Families" program also helps former military members and their families adjust to civilian life.  Veterans who work in the program say they can understand fellow vets challenges and needs and "speak the same language" when it comes to offering help.

You can find out more about the program at redcross.org or by calling 520-318-6740.
