VAIL, Ariz (KGUN9-TV) - A big change just hit the community of Vail.
The area has lots of homes but limited retail.
That changed Wednesday morning when a super Walmart opened at Houghton and Mary Ann Cleveland Way.
The store brings almost a 100 thousand square feet of groceries and general retail, plus about two hundred full and part time jobs.
For the variety of a super store, some people around Vail had to plan on a significant spell in the car.
Marilyn Suhay says, "We are out of the way but yet we're close enough now that it's not going to take an all day long or you have to plan your whole day around your shopping."
In roughly ten years, a lot of Vail has changed from ranch land to densely packed suburbs but retail has not grown as fast, with just a few medium sized centers so when someone opens a super store....
Nancy Boccardo says, "We're super happy about it. We've been waiting for along time for it to open. We've been driving through and seeing.. It's a big life changer because we drive a 12 passenger van so, a lot of gas and..."
Since Sam Walton opened his first Walmart about fifty years ago, Walmart has grown so large the company says 60 percent of the people in the U.S. shop at a Walmart each week.
Lee Johnson is proud to start and manage a new store. He says he started in a Walmart dairy section 12 years ago.
Now he knows other retail will surround his store.
A burger place...and a dental office are just part of the developers plan.
Johnson says, "Competition is what makes you better. It keeps you on your toes, it makes you improve yourself."
KGUN9 reporter Craig Smith asked: "So you're hoping to look across the street and see a competitor?"
Johnson: "Absolutely, absolutely."
And shoppers we met at the new Walmart are looking forward to price competition getting them some better deals.
