Study: Gem show sparks $120 million in spending

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson's series of gem shows brings in more than precious metals. It also draws cold, hard cash -- drawing $120 million in direct spending.
According to an economic study by FMR Associates, commissioned by the city, the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase was responsible for $120 million in direct spending this year. The figure is a 20 percent boost from 2007's haul of $100 million spent by buyers, exhibitors and owners.
Much of the increased spending came from buyers, who spent $70 million this year, compared to $52 million in 2007.
"The Gem Show is a signature event for Tucson," said Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, in a news release. "I'm very pleased to see the increase in visitors from around the world, and I'm sure that the vendors and folks who come year after year will greatly enjoy getting around on the streetcar next year."
