St. Gregory school drops 'Saint,' now known as 'The Gregory School'
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - St. Gregory College Preparatory School has changed its name to the Gregory School.
The private school, at 3231 N. Craycroft Road, teaches grades 5 through 12. It started the 2013-2014 school year Tuesday with its new moniker.
The school, which opened in 1980 and has no religious affiliation, was named after Pope Gregory the Great, the patron saint of education.
The school's board has been exploring the name change over the past 18 months, and made the move to keep the institution being mistaken for a Catholic school.
"It's important to spend time talking about who we are and what we do rather than what we are not," said Julie Sherrill, who is in her second year as head of school, in a news release. "The Gregory School honors the rich tradition that was created by Bazy Tankersley and our founders in 1980, while still positioning us to move forward as one of only four independent schools in Arizona accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest."
