Could a social media craze be causing the spread of head lice?

By Stella Inger. CREATED Feb 26, 2014

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Selfie was the word of 2013, but now it could have a dubious new distinction...causing head lice!

A California center that specializes in head lice says it has seen a 50 percent increase in cases among high schoolers since 2012.

The owner of the clinic says she suspects selfies are to blame!

She says that the pest is transferred through head to head contact--    a common pose when trying to squish into a "camera phone" picture.

The claim is still untested though. A Harvard scientist says the clinic lacks evidence.

I'm Stella Inger. I hope you'll join Guy Atchley and me tonight at 5, 6, and 10. And remember, you can join the conversation at kgun9.com, Facebook and Twitter.
