SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) -Sierra Vista Police Department took four suspects into custody Friday, putting an end to the recent vehicle damage crime spree by the local teens.
Officials with Sierra Vista Police tell KGUN9 that 18-year-old Christian Kyle Bense, 16-year-old Jacob Evan Hocker, and 17-year-old Zachary Taylor Carter Bennet were all arrested. The fourth suspect was a 16-year-old from Hereford.
Sierra Vista resident Rue Case was headed to the airport Tuesday morning when he first noticed the shattered glass reflecting off the street below. Above, his window was bashed in.
"I just couldn't believe it. I just kind of stared at it," Case told 9OYS as he lifted the tape and tarp from his broken back side-rear window.
Case's timeline matches many others. Sierra Vista police say this is one of more than 20 cases of vehicle vandalism to hit Sierra Vista's west side this week. Police say the vandals hit sometime late Monday into Tuesday.
"This is part of a larger scheme of criminal damage reports that we've been taking. However, it is extremely rare in Sierra Vista to get criminal damage on this type of scale," Sierra Vista Police Sgt. Brett Mitchell said.
According to Mitchell, in the last three weeks, residents have reported more than 60 cases of vehicle vandalism.
Detecives were able to catch the vandals by piecing together the trail of broken car windows, initiating surveillance teams, and following up with concerned citizens.
