TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Firefighters battled a large blaze on the east side Tuesday.

Rural/Metro Fire Department tells KGUN9 that the fire erupted inside house and the flames spread to  cars in the 9200 block of east Kayenta Drive.

Crews on scene said the house was 50 percent involved in flames when they arrived.

The family was on the porch when they first noticed the smoke and flames coming from the kitchen of the home. They also heard their smoke detectors going off.

Rural/Metro tells us the family was able to get out safely, but two cats died in the fire. One cat is still missing.

A total of 30 firefighters, and seven units responded.

In addition to the house, at least four cars caught on fire as well. Propane tanks in the garage led to several small explosions.

Firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to nearby homes but neighboring houses were scorched.

Rural/Metro says the home is a total loss. Fire investigators remained on scene to try and determine what caused the fire.
