Police: Ariz. officer shot during traffic stop
PAYSON, Ariz. (AP) - An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer has been shot several times during a traffic stop and has been rushed to surgery.
KTVK-TV reports that the officer was shot late Saturday just south of Payson.
According to authorities, the officer was shot after he pulled over a white vehicle for a traffic stop.
Investigators say the injured officer, whose name was not released, drove himself to a local hospital in Payson and was then air-lifted to a hospital in the Phoenix area.
DPS, Gila County Sheriff and Payson Police later pursued the suspect's vehicle for about 40 miles along SR87, outside of Payson.
Authorities say officers and the suspect eventually exchanged gunfire. Police say the suspect was later found dead with a gunshot wound to the head.
