Phoenix police shoot, kill burglary suspect on rooftop
PHOENIX (AP) - A burglary suspect is dead after trading gunfire with Phoenix police while he was perched on a rooftop.
Sgt. Steve Martos says police were called around 2 a.m. Monday to an apartment complex near Northern and 35th avenues about a possible break-in.
Martos says the suspect was standing on the roof of a shed next to a condominium and wielding a gun.
He says the suspect ignored officers' commands to put down his firearm.
The suspect then jumped off the shed and fired at a group of five officers. The officers shot back.
The suspect, whose identity was not released, died at the scene. He is described as Hispanic and in his 20s.
No officers were injured.
Investigators spent most of the morning processing the scene.
