Mom of fallen Ariz. firefighter files $32M claim
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - The mother of one of 19 wildland firefighters killed in north-central Arizona has filed a $36 million claim against the state, Yavapai County and the city of Prescott.
Marcia McKee says the three entities failed to follow proper firefighting procedures and blamed that for the death of her 21-year-old son, Grant McKee, in the Yarnell Hill Fire.
A claim is a precursor to a lawsuit.
Marcia McKee is seeking $12 million apiece from the state, Yavapai County and Prescott. But she says she'll settle for $12 million within the next 60 days.
McKee's claim is the first from any family members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. Nearly the entire crew died June 30.
Spokesmen for Prescott and Gov. Jan Brewer declined comment. An attorney for Yavapai County says the claim is under review.
