McCain's presidential campaign committees fined
PHOENIX (AP) - John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign committees have been fined $80,000 for accepting contributions that exceeded federal limits.
The Federal Election Commission says McCain's campaign accepted nearly $378,000 in contributions that exceeded the limits of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971.
The Arizona Republic says the law restricts contributions from individual donors to no more than $2,300 each for the primary and general elections.
The commission says the fine is part of a compliance agreement entered by John McCain 2008 Inc., the McCain-Palin Compliance Fund Inc., and John Schmuckler. He served as treasurer of both presidential campaign committees for the Republican senator from Arizona.
Under the agreement, McCain's campaign admitted to the violations and agreed to pay the fine and to "cease and desist" from committing any more violations.
