McCain does jury duty in Phoenix, cut from panel

PHOENIX (AP) - Sen. John McCain has been released from jury duty after spending a morning in Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix.

The Arizona Republican ended up on a panel of prospective jurors for the re-trial of a man whose convictions in the 1991 killings of nine people at a Buddhist temple west of Phoenix were overturned on appeal.

The judge released McCain Monday after telling about 80 jurors in his group that a narrow exemption from service includes people like an "E.R. doctor or a U.S. senator."

The trial is expected to last at least six weeks.

McCain didn't ask for special treatment and said he would have served on a short trial even if he had to cancel a few meetings.
