Marana School District goes green
MARANA (KGUN9-TV) - Students in Marana are noticing a big change as they head back to school.
Solar panels are up at eight of the schools in the Marana Unified School District. Officials with the district said it received the solar panels for free. The district qualified for the Renewable Energy Credits offered by Tucson Electric Power.
In the first year, the solar panels will save the district an estimated $200,000.
The panels also provide shade over playgrounds and parking lots at some of the schools.
“Where we were able to place solar rays either over basketball courts or playground equipment,” said Tamara Crawley with MUSD, “We have the additional benefit of providing shade to our students, especially in Tucson and the Marana community where it is exceptionally hot.”
