Lockdown lifted after explosion at Hawaii school

CREATED Jan. 30, 2014

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Officials in Hawaii say a lockdown has been lifted at a Big Island high school after a small bomb exploded outside an auditorium. No injuries were reported, and police say two minors are in custody.

Hawaii Department of Education spokesman Alex Da Silva says police and fire officials gave an all-clear just before 1 p.m. Thursday after finding no other devices on campus.

Da Silva says students resumed classes and are being let out at their normal time. The lockdown lasted less than two hours.

Da Silva says the homemade device is being described as a "bottle bomb."

He says it went off on a walkway leading to the auditorium. A class was in session in the auditorium, but nobody was near the explosion.

It wasn't clear if the device was meant to hurt anyone or if it was a prank.
