Local chef Ken Harvey takes on Ironman for a cause

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV)- Ken Harvey is the Executive Chef at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson. He's known for his smoked salmon and ribs, but lately instead of visiting the BBQ rack he's been making trips to the bike rack.

Harvey is training for his first Ironman.  This is a one day race that consists of 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile swim and a 26.2-mile run.  He's doing it all for one little girl by the name of Miranda.

Tu Nidito, a non-profit organization that helps out young children and families in need, paired him up with Miranda several months ago.

For 8 months now, Harvey has been training for the August 3rd Triathlon in Boulder, Colorado.  He was close to meeting the four year old girl when he was delivered some sad news at the end of June.

Miranda, who was dealing with a brain tumor since she was four months old, finally passed away.

Harvey is not just riding for Miranda, he's now inspired by Miranda and he is even more determined to cross that finish line in a few days.
