TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Firefighter crews have contained the Jackalope Fire, while the Deer Head Fire continues to burn, creating a smoke column that remains visible from Tucson.

Both blazes, in the Rincon Mountains District of Saguaro National Park, were caused by lightning.
The Deer Head Fire has now reached 1,003 acres and continues to function in the manner of a controlled burn that will protect the forest's key resources in the long run, official say. Firefighters are directing the blaze away from important areas, including the historic Manning Camp.
Firefighters controlled the Jackalope Fire at 8 p.m. Wednesday, allowing the Tanque Verde Trail and Juniper Basin Campground to reopen Thursday morning.
