TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - American Indian gaming has given more than $1 billion to the state over the last 11 years.

The Arizona Indian Gaming Association announced the Arizona Department of Gaming figure Thursday. The funds go to schools, hospitals and municipalities. Of the $1 billion distributed, schools have drawn the largest share, at $430 million. Hospitals received $215 million. The agencies have tracked gaming revenues and state contributions since 2004.

Peter Rhee, chief of the University of Arizona division of trauma, critical care, burn and emergency services, said in a news release that the funds are crucial to the state's medical care.
