Historic local McDonald's renovation

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Mcdonald's restaurant located on Speedway near Campbell is a piece of Tucson history.

It is the oldest operating Mcdonald's in the region. But for the next four months, the restaurant will be closed down for renovation.

They officially closed their doors at 6 a.m. Sunday and began the demolition process Monday.

Since the restaurant opened 47 years ago, this single Mcdonald's has served more than 20 million customers.

Additionally, it's the last remaining Mcdonald's in Tucson not to be rebuilt. But again, that's all going to change with a bigger and better restaurant.

"We're really building this around the U of A students, says owner Michael Osborne."We're going to have enhanced wi-fi, and additional power ports in the lobby to plug in their devices, so they can come in and study."

Monday, Mcdonald's executives held a ceremony commemorating the iconic restaurant. City leaders, University of Arizona officials and the Tucson Chamber of Commerce attended. Feelings were bittersweet.

"It's got mixed emotions. The buildings been around for a long time but we're really looking forward to the new building for efficiency," says Osborne.

On Tuesday, the roof is coming down. Wednesday, the entire building will be demolished.

August 27, 2014 is the slated date for the renovated restaurant to reopen, as university students return to class.
