Group to file petitions blocking new election law

By Jordan Coughenour. CREATED Sep 11, 2013

PHOENIX (AP) - A group opposed to a sweeping Republican-backed election law signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer in June plans to file petitions supporting a referendum on Wednesday.

Protect Your Right to Vote says it has more than enough signatures to block the law from taking effect until voters can review it during the November 2014 general election.

House Bill 2305 was passed in the last hours of the legislative session over the opposition of Democrats. They called it a thinly veiled effort to keep Republicans in power by creating new hurdles for low-income voters and some candidates.

Supporters say it cleans up early-voting rolls, evens the playing field for third-party candidates and will ensure quicker election results.

The group must have 86,405 valid signatures.
