Game and Fish asks to use helicopters to monitor Bighorn sheep

By Craig Smith. CREATED Aug 7, 2014

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Arizona Game and Fish is asking federal permission to land helicopters in the protected Pusch Ridge wilderness area.

The idea is to be able to reach Bighorn sheep in the steep terrain. The agency moved Bighorns there to rebuild a herd that died out in the 90’s.

Game and Fish says it needs extra help checking on the herd's movements.

Joe Sacco of Game and Fish says, “There may be times we want to go in and capture sheep; either they have disease and we want to go in and treat them or they have failing collars or something like that."

Environmentalists worry the helicopters will disturb all wildlife and human visitors.

Game and Fish says it will use helicopters when no other method will work and plans on making no more than 20 landings per year.
