Former Ariz. prison guard faces extortion charges
PHOENIX (AP) - A former officer with the Arizona Department of Corrections is facing felony extortion charges.
State officials say 22-year-old Jordan Martie of Winslow was arrested on charges that he allegedly extorted money from an inmate and his family. Another inmate at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Winslow also faces charges in connection with the scheme.
Martie has resigned his position. He had worked for the department since February. It's not clear if he has an attorney.
Department investigators say Martie and the suspect inmate developed a scheme in which the inmate threatened a fellow inmate and demanded $900 in protection money. Martie allegedly offered his protection to the victim in exchange for the $900 to be paid by the victim's family.
The case has been turned over to the Navajo County attorney's office.
