Father of boy struck and killed by deputy speaks after filing claim

CREATED Sep. 8, 2013

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - It has been nearly two months since police say a Pima County Sheriff's deputy struck and killed 10-year-old Xavier Sanchez while behind the wheel of a marked Sheriff's vehicle.  According to reports, the 10-year-old ran into the southside street.

Now, just a few weeks since filing a wrongful death claim against Pima County, Jimmy Sanchez, Xavier's father, wants to get the story straight.

"Well, I'm not doing this for money. Whatever they state about money, that's not true. All I want is justice for my son," Jimmy told 9OYS.

Jimmy says he has unanswered questions surrounding the deadly accident. The questions, he says, are his reasoning for the claim.

Last week, Tucson police told 9OYS the criminal investigation into Deputy Jesus Verduzco, the Pima County deputy they say was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, is "ongoing."

Meantime, officials with the PCSD say they are in the early stages of an internal investigation and waiting on Tucson Police reports.

The grieving father says by keeping the memory of his son alive, he hopes witnesses, even many months later, will come forward.

"If there's anybody out there who really [saw] the accident, who really saw anything, they need to step up," Jimmy continued.
