Parents charged with death of 2-month-old baby
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson Police charged two parents in connection with the death of their two-month old baby.
Sgt. Chris Widmer with TPD tells KGUN9 that 2-month-old Mavrik Riggin died Monday after detectives say his father, Fayde Riggin, shook him multiple times over a month long period.
Police say the mother of the little boy, Katherine Fitzgerald, 20, was also charged Tuesday with child abuse after police say she knew the baby needed medical attention but failed to seek it.
On August 12, police were called to the 1200 block of South Turquoise Vista after reports of an unresponsive baby. Paramedics took the baby to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Fayde Riggin was initially arrested on a child abuse charge.
Detectives say Fayde Riggin had recently moved back into the home with the mother and the baby. Fayde Riggin grew frustrated with the baby and shook him multiple times.
The baby sustained serious internal injuries.
Detectives added the first degree murder charge to Fayde Riggin's initial child abuse charge on Monday when the baby died.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police would like parents to know that shaking a baby can cause serious injury or death. Police say it only takes a few seconds to cause permanent damage.
