TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A man woke up to the sound of his smoke alarm going off while his apartment was on fire.

Capt. Barrett Baker with the Tucson Fire Department says the flames ignited in an apartment in the 1600 block of El Rio Drive, near Speedway and Silverbell Road around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Volunteers with the Red Cross are now assisting 9 families, or 40 people, who are being displaced because of the fire, according to Mike Sagara with the Red Cross.

Sagara tells 9OYS that most of the people are being displaced because crews are shutting off the power to the apartment building that caught fire.

The Red Cross is currently providing shelter to 27 people, 15 adults and 12 children, according to Sagara.

The Red Cross is also assisting twomen who were living in a unit that was badly damaged by the fire, Sagara said.
