ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan has kicked off a four-state, back-to-school bus tour in New Mexico with discussions about the importance of early childhood education.

Duncan started Monday in Santa Fe and then headlined a roundtable discussion at an elementary school in Albuquerque on efforts to turn around low-performing schools.

Duncan told school district officials, teachers and parents on Thursday that politicians need to see education as an investment rather than an expense. He says the future of the country depends on it.

The Education Department has invested up to $2 million per school to improve more than 1,300 schools nationwide. The Obama administration also has plans for spending $75 billion over 10 years to provide preschool for all 4-year-olds in the U.S.

Duncan will also be making stops this week in Texas, Arizona and California.
