TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A suspected drunk driver led a sheriff's deputy on a chase and slammed into a car while driving in the wrong lane on New Year's Eve, sending two women to the hospital.

Deputy Tracy Suitt with the Pima County Sheriff's Department tells KGUN9 that deputies began looking for a pick-up truck Tuesday evening after reports of an intoxicated driver.

Around 9:00 p.m., deputies found the truck.

The driver, 34-year-old Alfonso Gutierrez Mateo, was driving in the opposite lane and drove head-on towards the deputy without any head lights, according to Suitt.

Shortly after the initial stop, Mateo sped away, again driving in the opposite lane, eastbound on Speedway Blvd.

The deputy followed Mateo for approximately 1.5 miles. Then, he crashed head-on into a vehicle that was occupied by two women, Suitt said.

The passenger, a woman in her twenties, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle, another woman in her twenties suffered only minor injuries, according to Suitt.

Paramedics also transported Mateo to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Once he is released from the hospital, deputies plan to charge Mateo with aggravated driving under the influence, two counts of aggravated assault, criminal damage, fleeing from law enforcement, driving on a suspended license and at least one outstanding warrant, Suitt said.
