TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Pima County Sheriff's Department is searching a driver who fled the scene of head-on crash that seriously injured the other driver.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. Sunday on Houghton Road near Dawn Road, which leads to the Tucson Speedway race track.
Deputies say the driver of a white Silverado truck took off into the desert after smashing head-on into a red car, sending that driver to the trauma center.
Witnesses say it all started in the parking lot after the races at the Speedway.
"We noticed a guy in a white pickup truck doing doughnuts on both sides of the parking lot and across lanes of traffic and around people with families," Wendy Gore said.
She said they tried to get him to knock it off and told him he was being unsafe.
"They got out, ripped off their shirts and started to try to fight with everyone that was around them asking why are you not being safe," Gore said. "But at this time you could tell they were extremely intoxicated."
They called 911 and deputies were on their way even before the crash. Deputies say the driver had assaulted a man, bashing him in the head.
Then witnesses say he peeled out of the parking lot, turned onto Houghton Road and smashed right into the red car.
Nine On Your Side was on scene as the driver of the red car cried out in pain as paramedics carefully removed him.
He was airlifted to a trauma center. Deputies say his injuries are not life threatening.
Then deputies turned their attention to the search. They had a survey plane in the sky and deputies with guns on the ground.
Tucson Police brought several dogs to scour the desert, but after hours of searching they called off the dogs and turned their attention closer to town.
Detectives are now checking several addresses to track down the driver and his passengers, who may have more information.
Detectives are unsure whether the passengers were in the car at the time of the crash or took off in another car just before.
Houghton Road was closed in that area for several hours before being reopened shortly before 10 p.m.
Two vehicles were involved in the collision.
The driver of the red sedan has been air-lifted to a local area hospital, said Rodriguez. The driver of the white truck fled the scene of the collision.
Deputies and K-9's are searching the desert area near the collision scene.
Houghton Road near the racetrack will be closed for the next several hours while deputies investigate, said Rodriguez.
