Dispatchers field dozens of calls on Yarnell fire

CREATED Sep. 18, 2013

YARNELL, Ariz. (AP) - Dispatchers in Yavapai County fielded more than 130 calls in the first three days of a wildfire near Yarnell that killed 19 members of a Hotshot crew.

The Yavapai County Attorney's Office released the 911 recordings Tuesday, along with a list of items taken from the area where the men died. Those included radios, fire shelters and cellphones.

The Yarnell Hill Fire started June 28 and trapped the Granite Mountain Hotshots two days later as wind pushed it toward Yarnell. It was fully controlled July 12.

So many people had called in with reports of smoke and flames that dispatchers weren't able to transfer them all to fire departments. The dispatchers had to take down names and numbers at times, promising the callers that someone would be in touch.
