Calif. man picks up Arpaio sling sold at auction

CREATED Jul. 18, 2013

PHOENIX (AP) - A northern California man came to Arizona to pick up a sling that he won in an online charity auction and was worn by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio as he recovered from a broken shoulder.
Arpaio says the $2,600 that police dog trainer Buck Dikes paid for the sling will be used to buy equipment and food for a shelter run by the sheriff's office for abused animals picked up in cruelty investigations.
Dikes picked up the sling on Thursday.
Two treadmills were bought for the shelter's dogs that must remain inside because the pavement outside is too hot to walk on.
Arpaio wore the sling for three months after he recovered from a broken left shoulder suffered on Feb. 28 when he tripped while crossing a street.
