MARANA, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - The body found in the desert area near Trico Road and Avra Valley Road on June 6, has been identified as 13-year-old Maribel Victoria Gonzales from Tucson.

Her family last saw her around 8:00 p.m. on June 3 and she was reported as a runaway to another local law enforcement agency on June 4.

The Sheriff's Department Homicide Unit continues it's investigation as the death is still considered suspicious.

The cause of death is pending the completion of a forensic examination.

According to deputies, shortly before 1 p.m. on June 6, a woman spotted the body off a dirt road near Avra Valley and Trico Road. Iinvestigators say the body was so decomposed, they could not yet determine how long the body had been there or if there were signs of trauma.

"[Heat] generally does speed up the process that's why it will be up to the medical examiner. He'll help us determine a timeline for when this could have occurred but the excessive heat certainly speeds up that process," PCSD Criminal Investigations Division Capt. Don Kester said.

Investigators can say for certain, the body had been there for some time.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME.
