Desert bighorn sheep to be reintroduced to Pusch Ridge area

CREATED Nov. 7, 2013

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Pusch Ridge area in the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson will once again be home to a herd of Desert Big Horn Sheep this month.

Mark Hart with The Arizona Game and Fish Department tells KGUN 9 they plan to capture about 30 bighorn sheep in the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge outside Quartzsite and release them onto Pusch Ridge.

The release of of the desert bighorn sheep is scheduled for Monday morning, November 18, at Catalina State Park.

The project will reintroduce bighorns to an area considered ideal terrain for the sheep.

A previous herd that lived in the same area prior to the introduction of major housing developments died out in the 1990s.

The Forest Service plans to place restrictions on use of the area during the sheep's lambing season.
