Beehive removed within 48 hours after 9OYS story airs

By Justin Schecker. CREATED Apr 25, 2014

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - As we move closer to summer, the chances of a bee attack in Southern Arizona are on the rise.

Nine on Your Side first showed you on Tuesday the beehive on the house next door to where viewer Donna DeConcini's lives in midtown. She feared at any moment the thousands of bees could cause the next devastating swarm.

DeConcini faced a a dilemma -- nobody would take down the hive.
"They wont touch it because it is not my property," DeConcini told 9 On Your Side Tuesday.
When Tucson Police passed her complaint along to code enforcement, city officials checked it out and told her the needed to give the homeowner adequate notice, up to 30 days, before taking action.
"I tried on my own as a homeowner and I wasn't able to be successful at all," she said of her efforts to get someone to remove the hive.
The beehive is now gone after it was taken down within 48 hours of 9 On Your Side's story airing Tuesday. Deconcini came home Thursday evening and found someone removed it.
"Thank you 9 On Your Side because my roommate was really happy when she got home and found that there were no bees she had to worry about and the dogs are out in the backyard and I don't have to worry about them," DeConcini said.
A code enforcement inspector returned to the property Thursday morning and called in a beehive remover after ruling it an exception to the 30-day rule.
"We contacted the city people and let them know this is an imminent safety and health hazard, so quite frankly I appreciate you guys bringing it to us," Ward 6 Councilman Steve Kozachik said. "Channel 9 was all over it."
"did the inspector go back out there yesterday in part to our story having aired?" 9 On Your Side asked Code Enforcement administrator Teresa Williams.
"He went out, yeah, I'm not sure if it was based on your story," Williams said.
DeConcini feels differently.
"Nothing would have been done if it wasn't 9 On Your Side coming out here," she said, "so you guys worked a miracle."
