PHOENIX (AP) - Linda Martin and Wendy Norrie have been friends for 55 years, but had never met until recently.

They have been pen pals since they were grade-schoolers a world apart.

Martin is in her mid-60s and now lives in Gilbert after growing up in Nebraska. Norrie lives in New South Wales, Australia.

On Monday, Martin was at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport's arrivals lounge, holding aloft an Australian flag and waiting for Norrie's first trip to the United States.

Norrie says it didn't feel like meeting a stranger. Martin says the meeting was very emotional and both women cried.

The Arizona Republic reports that Martin and Norrie have made plans for an elaborate tour of Arizona and Las Vegas and Martin is planning a trip to Australia in 2015.
