Arizona man accepts father's WWII Purple Heart
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - An Arizona man whose father was killed during World War II fighting on the island of Iwo Jima has accepted the Purple Heart medal on his father's behalf during a Vermont ceremony.
Harold Andreason, of Phoenix, was presented with his father's medal Friday during a ceremony in Burlington organized by the Vermont group Purple Hearts Reunited.
Afterward, Andreason was effusive in his praise and gratitude for the group, which contacted Andreason months ago to tell him the medal had been found by a man in Oregon and turned over to Purple Hearts Reunited.
Andreason's father - U.S. Marine Corps Pvt. George Harold Andreason - was a 22-year-old man from Cleveland, Ohio, when he was killed in action in 1945. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
