NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) - The Arizona Department of Transportation is launching a $1.5 million project to help ease truck traffic when the Mariposa Port of Entry opens its redesigned truck entry lanes next year.

The stopgap project includes synchronizing traffic signals on State Route 189 from the port to the highway's connection with Interstate 19.  The state also will add new turn lanes from SR 189 to northbound I-19 and widen the northbound I-19 entrance ramp by the end of the year.

The port is undergoing a $244 million expansion set to open next summer that will greatly expand truck traffic.

ADOT says it expects to need between $50 million to $215 million for long-term improvements. The signal and onramp fixes are designed to help until funding is found and the new improvements completed.
