Phoenix firefighter dies after fall from mountain

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have released the name of an off-duty Phoenix firefighter who died after he fell while rappelling down Camelback Mountain.

Phoenix Fire Department officials say 50-year-old Gary Johnstone was an engineer paramedic who had been with the department for 15 years after a decade with the Sun City Fire Department.

They say Johnstone joined the Phoenix Fire Technical Rescue Team in 2006.

Authorities say Johnstone and two 15-year-old boys were about 200 feet up the Echo Canyon Trail around 7 a.m. Friday when they fell approximately 30 feet.

Johnstone was taken to a hospital where he died.

One teen remains in critical condition and the other suffered minor injuries.

Authorities say it appears all three were in the middle of a rappelling or rock climbing maneuver when the accident occurred.
