Ex-foster mom sentenced to 6 months in death
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson woman convicted in the 2005 death of her foster child will serve six months in prison.
The Arizona Daily Star reported (http://bit.ly/1a9HwCs) Tuesday that Penny West was also sentenced to four years' probation.
Pima County Superior Court Judge Javier Chon-Lopez said at Monday's sentencing that the jail term was appropriate since West hadn't shown any remorse in 16-month-old Emily Mays' death.
Prosecutors say the girl died of a blunt-force head injury while in West's care.
They say doctors who treated her found extensive brain damage like one would sustain in a fall.
West's conviction was initially set aside due to insubstantial evidence but the Arizona Court of Appeals reinstated it in 2010.
Her attorney plans to appeal the sentence.
