CBP officers arrest 3, seize almost $100,000 in marijuana
DOUGLAS, Ariz. - Authorities arrested three people Thursday for attempting to smuggle a total of 188 pounds of marijuana across the Port of Douglas.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended a 24-year-old Mexican woman after a CBP canine alerted officers to her Ford sedan.
Officers uncovered 149 packages of marijuana enclosed within the doors and roof of the vehicle.
The drugs weighed nearly 183 pounds and were valued at $91,000.
Officers also arrested a 61-year-old Douglas woman riding with a 50-year-old Mexican national woman later that evening.
When the two women were stopped for a protocol inspection, officers discovered $2,860 worth of marijuana hidden in two packages wrapped around each of the woman's waists.
All three are being held by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security where they may be charged by complaint, a method that charges a person with criminal activity without inference of guilt.
All drugs and vehicles were confiscated.
