Stolen vehicle recovered at DUI checkpoint
COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - A 37-year-old man was arrested Saturday after riding in a stolen truck through a DUI checkpoint.
Carol Capas with the Cochise County Sheriff's Department tells KGUN9 that a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was passing through the checkpoint at about 9:40 p.m. when deputies ran the plates and noticed that they belonged to a 1969 truck.
Deputies then tried to make a traffic stop on the truck on State Route 90 near Colonia de Salud, but the truck did not yield and was eventually forced to stop because of vehicle damage.
The driver fled the scene but the passenger, 37-year-old Ellis Jon Mathis was arrested on two outstanding warrants and a new charge of possession of marijuana.
Mathis told deputies he was homeless.
The stolen truck came from Clark County, Washington and deputies are following leads to find the driver of the truck that fled the scene.
