TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A University of Arizona football player has been arrested on multiple felony charges.
Tucson police have indicted University of Arizona football player Patrick Onwuasor on multiple felony charges, according to Sgt. Maria Hawke with the Tucson Police Department.
At around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, April 29, police responded to an apartment in the 2500 block of West Anklam following a home invasion at the residence, Hawke said.
After approximately one and half months, police revived the case when officers from the Beverly Hills Police Department in Beverly Hills, California contacted the Tucson Police Department and provided detectives with information that they had discovered during a separate incident that occurred in their jurisdiction, according to Hawke.
The information they provided related directly to the home invasion incident that occurred on April 29, Hawke said.
Police then served a search warrant at an apartment located in the 800 block of East Wetmore Road, according to Hawke.
While searching through the residence, detectives discovered narcotic drugs, narcotic paraphernalia, marijuana and a weapon in a room believed to be the primary residence for 20-year-old Onwuasor, Hawke said.
Officials formally charged Onwuasor with multiple felony charges, including possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony drug offense and possession of narcotic paraphernalia, according to Hawke.
At this time, police do not believe Onwuasor was present during the home invasion incident that occurred in April, Hawke said. He has not been charged in connection to the incident.
Police continue to investigate the incident, according to Hawke.
Onwuasor, pronounded oh-WAH-so, is a sophomore from Inglewood, California and was referred to as "Peanut" by football coach Rich Rodriguez.
Onwuasor played safety and had 36 tackles during the 2012 season.
Rodriguez recently issued this statement in response to Onwuasor's arrest," We are aware of the situation with Patrick Onwuasor. He has been removed from the program."
